April is National Poetry Month, and we’re happy to say that poetry is alive and well—across the U.S. and right here in Croton-on-Hudson! From our many published poets to the poets who don’t even know it, we encourage everyone to read a little poetry each day. Better yet, try writing a poem of your own and either post it on our Facebook page, or tag us on your post!
We’re also excited to host a poetry event this month at The Grand in Croton’s Upper Village, where you can listen to local published poets recite their works and connect with fellow poetry lovers. In fact, we are introducing an Artists Happy Hour at The Grand on the Third Thursdays of each month, starting this month from 5:30 – 6:30 pm. We hope to see you there!
And if you were not able to attend some of our Women’s History Month events in March, you can still catch up. The Art and Photography exhibitions will remain on view at the Croton Free Library through April 26 and 29 (see events below), while the student exhibition will remain on view at the Black Cow through April 1st, and the Croton Historical posters will be taken down on April 9th. Reviews of past events and those ending early April are located toward the end of this newsletter.

Past Events

CCoA Sends Kudos to the Committee for “Our World’s Creative Women”
CCoA’s first ever celebration of Women’s History Month, Our World’s Creative Women, is now local history. The entire month will be remembered as a series of dynamic programs that highlighted the historical and contemporary women who have made and are making a difference in Croton and beyond. Three art exhibitions, two incredibly special concerts, an expert workshop on getting into print, a one-woman play, and a village-wide display of posters about historic Croton women made up the month-long observance. Now Croton is much richer for having seen, listened, watched and read about the remarkable women who make up and support our community.
Croton Council on the Arts committee members who initiated and oversaw the wide variety of programming for Women’s History Month are Carla Dago, Valerie Leis, Jane Parkhouse and Kathleen Walkup. They could not have organized these events without the support of so many of Croton’s citizens:

Croton has a long and continuing tradition of being a magnet for artists of all disciplines. The Croton Council on the Arts was born and grew out of this tradition and Croton’s 1976 Bicentennial celebrations. Local artists and supporters joined forces to stage events for the public in Croton and surrounding villages. Under poet and President Ruth Lisa Schechter’s dynamic leadership, the new council organized many productions in theater and dance, exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography, and musical recitals and poetry readings. The Croton Review, a literary magazine, was published annually in the 1980s. Croton residents greeted these contributions to our Village with great enthusiasm and CCoA quickly became a valuable asset in the cultural life of our community.
CCoA is in constant need of volunteers to help us run our activities, and come up with new ones. It's also a great way to network and enhance your sense of community. CLICK HERE to send email to us if you have questions or want to get involved with CCoA activities.
